Nature’s Voice Our Choice (NVOC), in cooperation with the Goodwill Social Work Center in Madurai, India has developed a project aimed at increasing the technical capacity of people living in slums of Madurai East and West Village Panchayat Union Blocks, to implement small urban rainwater harvesting projects.

Rainwater harvesting from rooftops is mandated by the Indian government and is common practice among those who can afford it.  However, in the slum areas where clean, affordable water is needed most, residents lack access the technical resources and training for developing basic rooftop rainwater harvesting structures.  The program involves training 2 technicians in 'Urban Rainwater Harvesting’ through the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board.  In the first year, these technicians will then train 500 residents over 16 weeks in rooftop rainwater harvesting techniques.  The project will also provide residents with on-site technical assistance and local available materials to construct simple rainwater harvesting conveyance and storage devices.

Run_offHarvesting and storing rainwater will provide residents with a source of clean water, reduce flooding and overflowing sewage during the monsoon, and improve the economic, health and living conditions for 5000 slum residents in the first year.  The project will also support a training center that will include:  demonstration rainwater harvesting structures and educational and technical resources (in local languages) developed by the Center for Science and Environment in New Delhi, who has been instrumental in advancing rainwater harvesting throughout India.  This project focuses on giving the extremely poor residents of Madurai, India the tools and knowledge to solve the problem of securing a basic human need, water!
